Setting up a POP3 mail account in Mozilla Thunderbird
Set up on the 17th September 2007 using version 2.0.0.6
Also tested using the Portable Edition, version 2.0.0.6 from PortableApps.com
Add Outgoing Server (SMTP) Settings:
- Within Mozilla Thunderbird, go to Tools > Accounts Settings, choose Outgoing Server (SMTP) from the left panel and click Add
- Enter a Description for the account
- Enter a Server Name
- Use Port 25
- Check 'Use name and password' and enter a User Name
- Under 'Use secure connection' select No, click OK
Add Accounts:
- Go to Tools > Accounts Settings, click Add Account
- Select Email account, click Next
- Enter a Display Name
- Enter an Email Address, click Next
- Select POP for the incoming server
- Enter an Incoming Server name
- Uncheck 'Use Global Inbox ...' if adding multiple email accounts and you want to manage them separately, click Next
- Enter a User name, click Next
- Enter an account name, click Next, click Finish
Assign the Outgoing Server (SMTP):
- Go to Tools > Accounts Settings and highlight the account from the left panel
- Under Outgoing Server (SMTP) choose the server that has just been set up, click OK
Send messages in Plain Text (optional):
- Go to Tools > Accounts Settings and select Composition & Addressing from the left panel
- Uncheck Compose messages in HTML format, click OK
- Go to Tools > Options and select Composition from the top panel
- Under Forward messages choose Inline
- Click Send Options, and, under Text Format choose Ask me what to do, click OK and exit Options
Messages will now be sent in plain text as default. To send a message in HTML format, hold down Shift on the keyboard while pressing Compose or Reply
Test the account is working by sending an e-mail (checking any firewalls or anti-virus software are not blocking the application)
