Remote login options

Note: On each initial login the user will be prompted with a warning that the server's host key was not found in the cache. To continue connecting and store the key for later use, answer yes.

Windows: CLI (command line interface)

Note: Use PuTTY.

This is similar to using the terminal in Linux.

  1. Download PuTTY Web icon
  2. Run PuTTY
  3. Configure PuTTY:
    • Enter a host name or IP address
    • Enter a port (usually 22)
    • Select SSH for connection type
    • Click open

  4. Enter a valid username and password

Windows: GUI (graphical user interface)

Note: Use WinSCP.

This is similar to using Nautilus SFTP in Linux.

  1. Download WinSCP Web icon
  2. Run WinSCP
  3. Configure WinSCP:
    • Enter a host name or IP address
    • Enter a port (usually 22)
    • Enter a valid username and password

  4. Click login

  1. Open a terminal session and type:
    ssh <username>@<host name or IP address>

    Note: Where <username> is the user you want to log in as, and <host name or IP address> is the host name or IP address of the computer you want to log in to.

  2. Enter the remote user password

Ubuntu: GUI (graphical user interface)

Note: Use Nautilus.

This is similar to using Explorer/WinSCP in Windows.

  1. Go to Places » Connect to Server
  2. Configure Nautilus:
    • Select SSH as the service type
    • Enter server details (host name or IP address)
    • Enter a valid username

  3. Click Connect and when prompted, enter the remote user password.

The remote computer will be mounted, and a link will be automatically added to the desktop.
