Disable the Adobe flash player auto-update notification

Note: Tested on the 24 June 2010 using version 10 on Windows XP Professional SP3.

Disable updating via Windows system:

  1. Open a text editor (such as Notepad), and enter the following:
    AutoUpdateDisable=1
  2. Select the file type as a UTF-8 encoding and name it mms.cfg

    flash player mms.cfg file

  3. Save the file in one of the following directories (for Windows XP and above):
    Flash 8 and above: C:\WINDOWS\System32\Macromed\Flash\
    Flash 7 and below: C:\WINDOWS\System32\

Disable updating using the Global Notifications Settings Panel:

  1. Go to: http://www.macromedia.com/support/documentation/en/flashplayer/help/settings_manager05.html Web icon
  2. Uncheck Notify me when an update to Adobe Flash Player is available

Manually updating Flash Player:

  1. Go to: http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/ Web icon to view the current version installed the system.
  2. Go to: http://www.adobe.com/go/getflashplayer/ Web icon to get the latest version (requires Adobe Download Manager).
Tip: Alternatively, to install flash without using the Adobe Download Manager, but a stand-alone executable installer, go to: http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/support/ Web icon, scroll to the bottom of the page, and choose the relevant executable.
